As the USA’s sixth-largest, community-owned, not-for-profit electric service provider, Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) has been providing low-cost, reliable electricity to Sacramento County for nearly 75 years. Advizzo is delighted to have entered into a contract with SMUD to provide programmatic support and technical expertise for its Home Electricity Reports Program (HERS).

SMUD is a globally recognized industry leader and award winner for its innovative energy efficiency programs, renewable power technologies and for its sustainable solutions for a healthier environment. It provides electricity to 1.5 million people and generates the bulk of its power (which is about 50 percent non-carbon emitting) through natural gas and large hydroelectric generation plants.

In 2020, SMUD’s power supply was more than 60% carbon free. The company’s goal is to reach zero carbon in its electricity production by 2030. In order to expedite carbon reductions due to the growing threats of climate change, earlier this year SMUD announced an accelerated timeline for its 2030 zero carbon plan. Over the next nine years it will run a new type of decarbonization engagement program focused on its customers.

Advizzo will work with SMUD on its new HERS program during 2022 – 2023. The program will focus on decarbonization and Time Of the Day awareness. The aim of the program is to reduce carbon cumulatively by providing customers with tailored messaging relating to their electricity consumption and personalized decarbonization tips to encourage customers to change their behavior and reduce their consumption, especially during Peak periods.

It will also encourage customers to switch from gas powered systems to electric powered systems, as well as increasing the use of PV, EV Battery storages, and efficient electric appliances.

SMUD will leverage Advizzo’s Data and Behavioral Science based customer engagement platform, alongside its experience and expertise. Together we will design and deliver a state-of-the-art HER program that achieves measurable decarbonization outcome; increases customer satisfaction; educates and empowers customers to utilize their electricity on SUMD’s Time-of-Day rates; and increases participation in energy efficiency, renewable and customer service programs.

The program’s initial goal is part of an Initiative to achieve 12 GWh annualized electric savings, resulting in 16,000 tons of lifetime carbon reduction.

Lora Anguay, Chief Zero Carbon Officer, SMUD, commented:

“SMUD is looking forward to working with Advizzo, a leader in environmental behavior science, to create the next evolution of Home Electricity Reports that help customers save even more. With its new carbon reduction focus, these reports will provide personalized information to help customers lower their carbon footprint from their energy usage, supporting SMUD’s 2030 Zero Carbon Plan. This is yet another example of the important role our customers, community and partners will play in paving the way towards a cleaner and healthier region for all.”
